FACEBOOK SETS WIRELESS WORLD RECORD, TRANSMITS DATA AT 20 GBPS OVER 13.2 KILOMETERS

Beijing time, November 11th,Facebook announced that they successfully use millimeter wave technology to achieve the 20Gbps data transmission rate, which set wireless world record.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg has been talking about connecting the whole world for years, but he hasn’t just been talking. Facebook’s Connectivity Lab is working on high-capacity, low-cost, energy-efficient wireless connectivity with the millimeter-wave (MMW) radio frequency spectrum. The group recently set a world record for data transmission.

MMW is a point-to-point transmission technology, which makes it difficult and uneconomical to use for individual residential connections. Because of its potential data capacity, however, MMW is highly suitable for connecting internet service to distribution points. In a point-to-point land-based test from a mountaintop in Malibu, California to a building rooftop in Woodland Hills, a line-of-sight distance of 13.2 km (8.2 miles), the Connectivity Lab achieved a data rate of nearly 20 Gbps.
